Strengths-based practice is interconnected with recovery, processes of exercise, conversational, writing, art and group healing, personal stories of success and inspiration, self-worth, care, acknowledgement and quality goal-setting.

All topics are about real people, real life, real healing.

The Gap of Enquiry (II)

Working forward from last months’ talks about conversational healing and what we termed informal enquiry, this month will continue with formal enquiry and the transition between the two. While informal enquiry has no identified structure and is open to interpretation relative to any given timing and/or environment, formal enquiry almost always has a pre-planned structure and desired objective. It is not as difficult as one might expect to move from informal to formal enquiry. Especially considering that:

a) It is a process which can flip-flop back and forth as often as is required given the particular situation and that:

b) Like everything else in the P.A.L.M© Project, flexibility negates rigidity so that structure and formality are words only, not necessarily binding truths.

When we are invited to talk – share – and we feel we are safe to do so, the healing begins. We express our grief, understanding (or lack of), frustrations, resentments, lost hopes and melancholy. At some point (and this could take a morning or a year) the shadows begin to lift and the darkness which consumed the stories of our present, become hopeful fables with possible futures. Not only will the listener begin to hear these 'diamonds in the rough’ as they gradually increase in size and frequency, the speaker too will notice a change in posture, tone, word choice and humour. For the listener to rush at this point, a confirmation that all is well and 'life is good' could be potentially debilitating. However, using sensitivity and patience these signals of hope can be slowly nurtured while the story unfolds, the gloom disperses and the hope grows bigger and bigger. Sometime soon after, formal enquiry can be gently introduced. Perhaps it will be a few questions on a sheet, 15 minutes of thoughtful practice or meditation, an exercise or two, a plan or a small goal.

FORMAL ENQUIRY:

In order for the reader to more fully appreciate what formal enquiry is I will offer some acronyms in common use .

CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy,

AI – Appreciative Inquiry,

ACT – Action and Commitment Therapy,

REBT – Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy,

GT - Gestalt Therapy,

IPT - Interpersonal Therapy,

NLP – Neuro-Linguistic Programming and also Focussing.

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

There are of course, many others being created and re-invented on a year-by-year basis. Perhaps though, they are all more similar than the commercialism which supports them would care to suggest? Confidently, a manager-friend once said to me of his non-attendance to an ACT workshop with a recognised promoter - Russ Harris - , “With all due respect, Buddhism and mindfulness have been in practice for over 2000 years”.

And so it should be noted here, I am writing only to increase an awareness of beneficial enquiry, not to provide information on formalities. There is after-all, an abundance of information available for interested people regarding all and any kind of therapy. And they have their place, as Robbins (2000) states, they all work some of the time for some of the people. But in my experience, though all of these methods are useful in one way or another, it is the common practice of visualisation and structured introspection which makes them complex and impractical for the majority of people in need. Many people are not versed in visualisation, cannot imagine colours and/or shapes and cannot determine where a particular feeling ‘sits’ inside their body let-a-lone, how to ‘move’ it. This is compounded when mental health is anything less than optimum and, it can be frustrating for the participant and worker alike. After several years of working with people I concluded there must be a better way to progress from informal enquiry to something more practical than the clinical parameters of formal options. So did Byron Katie when she woke up on the floor of a half-way house in 1986 (Katie 2003). Enter ‘The Work’.

  • In The Work, like other therapies of enquiry, we find that thoughts are not good or bad, they are just thoughts.

  • Hiding from, or refusing to acknowledge thoughts, does not make them go away. It does not make them smaller or less powerful.

  • You consciously choose your actions, not your thoughts.

In summary of the healing philosophy behind The Work, Katie (2003) gives us the profoundest of gems:

If you argue with reality you will lose, but only 100% of the time”.

Through structured and measurable formality yet, a certain gentle and supportive informalityThe Work is immensely powerful. It is a system yes, but of such simplicity and versatility that it argues with the definition. The basis is just four questions and an additional component - a turnaround. It is in my opinion a gift, received and shared by an even greater person. I encourage all interested readers to explore the possibilities for healing through the link at the end of this article for themselves and their loved ones (many professionals worldwide are embracing The Work too). As would only be the case from such a quality of human being, all of the paperwork and instruction necessary are available at Byron's website. I would however, encourage everyone to source, read and absorb Byron’s seminal work, Loving What Is. This will allow the participant and/or worker, to understand more fully, the theoretical underpinnings of such a profound discovery that The Work really is. I have personally found great solace in self, and practised, use of this enlightened offering which I too, share graciously.

By now, it would be encouraging to think that we all have a better understanding of the benefits of enquiry (asking and listening), informal or formal, and a broad appreciation of the differences between the two. To this end, Holford's (2009) 'summary' is most appropriate:

A problem shared really is a problem halved. While exercise and good nutrition will give you more mental and emotional energy to solve your problems, it doesn't take away the underlying issues that fuel depression, or always give you all the tools you need to deal with it. Feeling bad about yourself and lacking someone supportive to listen to you can be a major source of depression, however good your diet may be.”

But to close properly, I wanted to share just one example of my own experience into the forays of growing with others through Byron’s gift. I worked with a middle aged gentleman, I will call him Matt, who had admitted his debilitating alcohol addiction, discussed his failing relations, searing insecurities, loss of employment, chain smoking, failing health, heightened anxieties, increasing financial distress and potential homelessness. Over several months of meetings, while our rapport was strong, supporting him toward a healing and more positive future was yet to show any measurable progress. He agreed to try The Work and at one of our meetings, I sat down with him and with all the relevant paperwork. We set about firstly, ascertaining what his beliefs were and what the relevant questions would be. This took longer than anticipated as there were many. Not to want to disrupt the flow of our session, I agreed to a longer time and we began working through the first belief specifically. Through the four questions (and the 'sub enquiries') we had some deep discussion about the truth and the assumptions which had led Matt to his current ‘place’. But this all occurred still, without any real 'movement'. It should be noted here, I have noticed on occasion through using The Work, that the turnaround can be the most immensely powerful component when and if it is felt and absorbed. This is what happened next with Matt.

Matt's belief was simple enough, in respect to his ex-wife and their painful breakup over seven years previous, he believed “She should have treated me better”. He admitted the turnaround was easy “She should have treated herself better” I acknowledged that may have been the case, but witnessed no change in his emotion after he repeated the statement in whole and out loud. I told him I would write it down and I did so. I asked him if there were other words he could change to reflect another turnaround. He thought for a minute then asked “She shouldn't have treated me better?” He immediately stated that this was obviously wrong because she didn't treat him well enough as it was. I asked him to say it out loud again and witnessed no change. I wrote it down. Momentarily animated, he told me he had one more and proclaimed “She should have treated othersbetter!” followed by “which is bloody true because she was a real bitch to everyone!” A little agitated and maybe even slightly humorous, Matt's emotion was still untouched on a deep level. After I acknowledged his last statement and wrote it down, his shoulders finally slumped. “Are we done?” he bemoaned after nearly two hours of what could be rightly termed, hard and shared introspection. I agreed I thought we had worked enough for the day but pausing to follow a gut intuition, I questioned a little further. “Are you sure there's not just one more there Matt?” He thought for a minute but attested he could see no other possibilities. I then asked him what would happen if he changed She to I.He thought for a few seconds and uttered the new question abruptly as if he had been offended “should have treated myself better?” Upon hearing for himself, a stark look came over his face and he sat in silence for a few moments more before reiterating the same line, slowly and curiously this time. “I should have treated myself”, another pause and then almost incoherently through the onslaught of tears which poured from his eyes, “better” struggled out. I had no idea this would be the one.

And over the next twenty to thirty minutes, through the tears and the shaking, he related how badly he had let himself down, how poorly he had looked after himself during that time and how the truth resonated inside him that “should have treated myself better”. There was of course, a journey ahead but I wish Matt's teenage son had of been there to see this first step. An outpouring of pain and suffering which had been protected and nurtured for over seven years without question, without rest and without being acknowledged came flooding out. I was thirty years old when I saw my Father cry for the first time but believe young men need to see their Father's cry. They need to know thatreal men do cry, that real men need to cry, and that sometimes through the pain and suffering of our own lives, we all do.

Til next time, pleasant musings

The Gap of Enquiry (I)

PRELUDE: Amidst the gamut of positive and constructive feedback from my last article – Angels in Crisis – there was one comment in particular which stayed with me. It was suggested that mention of the P.A.L.M© acronym was ambiguous and perhaps even irrelevant. But because the work here and that which will follow relies heavily on the basis of the P.A.L.M© approach, it cannot be avoided. I was however, drawn to consider these apparent shortcomings and foster a better way. So at the end of this months article, I have included a link which offers both a downloadable P.A.L.M© graphic and explanatory notes. By having this readily available, I trust that all the work will rate a higher 'score' in understanding and enjoyment. Thank you for the comments, as always, please keep them coming!

The Gap of Enquiry (I)

2_n

The reason a particular aspect of a map or well-being guide would be called a gap, is the insinuation that a) it is often forgotten and b) it is in a place of discernible access – not always obvious, not always easy to get into. The gap of enquiry is no different and resides on the P.A.L.M© graphic in between the realm of crisis and practical application. Its’ positioning rightly suggests the benefits of conversation before and into crisis or after and out of crisis. It is a transitory area but, like all other aspects of P.A.L.M© - of life - ultimately flexible and open to healthy revisits time and time again.

So what happens in the gap of enquiry? It may seem an obvious answer however, enquiry is what happens – asking/listening. But like everything, which angle we come in from, leave at or even move in-between, is individual and spontaneous. That’s ok, that’s life. In no way should the graphic or the information ever become anything rigid, that would negate the purpose altogether. There is however, a general direction, flow and unfolding which can be mapped and discussed for the purposes of learning and understanding.

The first and perhaps most natural component of enquiry is what could be termed conversational healing - the art of chatting, a conflab, or ‘chewing the fat’. Healthy expression is talking out, that which ails us. Gordon (2008), relates to a breaking of perceived imprisonment,

When you let yourself feel the sadness or rage that gets stuck and buried in depression and you share those feelings, you are no longer depressed – pushed down and flattened out. You are expressing yourself and connecting with someone else. And when you do this simple thing, … you're no longer stuck, but moving”.

In this conversational dialogue there is no preordained formality, no ideal structure, it is what has been termed here; informal enquiry.

INFORMAL ENQUIRY: It is important that a process of informal enquiry come before a process of formal enquiry. The first reason for this is the ease at which we can initially talk things through. Talking things through is therapy in itself though most often under-represented in developed societies. It does not find recognition in the way of clinical acclaim unless used in formal settings. Who after all, has ever heard of clinical chatting? A second reason is the Fight and Flight and Freeze response. Between the well recorded fight and flight patterns of human response, lies the state of freeze – an incapacitation toward conscious action. It is relatively common and can be quite literal. Gordon (2008) again concurs relating the experience of depression with oft-felt “immobility and stuckness”. I also relate on a personal level remembering that my blood and toxicity were almost touchable and seemed to pool inside me. While I needed to move, I couldn’t walk on some days – literally.

In working with people, initially at least, it can be important to listen and listen only. Progress is important and warranted but, often, just listening and allowing for the process of enquiry to begin can be an essential component of moving forward. This is especially the case where the motivational stage is pre-contemplative. Over the course of time, attitudes and reflections will change, timely interjections may begin.

Further, it is generally accepted through international teachings of strength-based practice, that a five or six column approach to wellness includes enquiry (validation) as proceeding all else. Finding hidden aspirations, dreams, hopes and inner strengths (generally columns two and three) can only be explored once the blockages are ‘talked out’ - out of the way. Once difficulties are worked through, forward and back as necessary, enquiry can ‘un-package’ pain, trauma, resentments, relation difficulties, perspectives, dreams, aspirations and tucked-away hopes for a better and healing future.

And finally, there is another quality option which may be considered when working with alleviating, and even eliminating, these obstacles from our paths. It's drawing. And as Ganim (2004) explains, this source of expression does not come from rationale or logic,

The process of transformation in expressive art involves asking your heart, not your mind, for a less stressful, more positive way to respond to a painful experience. Your heart will respond in images, not words, because imagery, as split-brain research of the 1980's proved, is the inner language of the body-mind.”

1john

But while this is a wonderful solo therapy, easy to undertake and free (journaling also deserves the award), I am talking here of its inclusion as a shared enquiry. In fact, I will delve further toward a semi-structured example which may aid us in appreciating the transition between informal and formal enquiry, the latter which will be explored in depth next month.

I once worked with a woman who was suffering from a high degree of agoraphobia and paranoia. Unable to leave her home on most days, we worked in the early stages, through a process of enquiry. We worked to get out whatever it was that was stuck inside her, holding her back from healing, valuing herself, participating in her own life and realising the immense strength she had within. Part of what we did was to use a method simply called story. As an artist, I became the conduit for the details of her life, told to me one afternoon in her home. There was little to no eye contact, though we had good rapport at this point. She would take her time reflecting in answer to the enquiries I would make. Responsively, I would draw symbols and shapes, linking them together in pictorial emotion and seeking only for confirmation as to their relevance and appropriateness regarding her own perceptions. Sometimes I would erase and start again with further dialogue, greater understanding. Other times, she would look at what I had done and then turn away to sit silently with the power of her depicted life.

This is not an easy task, not a painless endeavour, sensitivity is called for. And several hours later I left, verbally thankful for her courage and the shared experience. I left her with a very large sketched, shaded and coloured visual representation of her entire life. Perhaps it needed more, some adjustments, some elimination, perhaps not. But either way, it was finished for now. It was ready to be viewed, to be felt and to be allowed its healing time. The next day she called me and apologised for appearing emotionless when we last met. She was sorry not to have 'said' more, and related that afterwards, she cried for two hours straight. She described feeling like an oppressive weight was lifting off her and suggested we might venture out of the house early in the next week. Such is the power of enquiry when it is safely shared and openly felt. Only now was it possible, that the journey of recovery could gently begin.

Next time we will explore formal enquiry, the transition from what was discussed today and, something very special in-between the two. It is easy to underestimate the power of talk - the power of communication – but we do so at our own peril. It is something we can all use to listen, connect, share our stories, unpack our demons and validate. The outcome will always be, in one way or another, better individuals, better communities, better mental health.

Pleasant musings

Planning The Stumble

ANGELS IN CRISIS

pensive1

Surely, every person who engages in this thing we call life must acknowledge that smooth sailing is a seldom occurrence? Often, if not more often than otherwise, the challenges before us to survive and live well emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually can invite stumble. The socially constructed image of constant happiness, all-nighters without consequence, sleepless growth and wrinkle free elation, is a farce. Every person needs a crisis plan.

In my teaching of P.A.L.M - a navigational tool to assess status and directional possibilities – the crisis plan sits at the base of the ‘schematic’. Much of the initial writings here will explore all facets of the P.A.L.M concept toward greater health and wellbeing. But the reason the crisis plan sits at the base of everything else is the insinuation of support. It is like the veritable concrete foundation which, when ‘laid’ well, will remain intact even as a building may crumble and fall away. This analogy exemplifies why the plan is paramount for staying alive to ‘fight’ another day. And while no-one, including myself, would like to suggest that any person should experience a life which crumbles and falls away to any degree, the possibility of stumble is a realistic one. Not bad, not good, just realistic.

Moore (1992) talks of ‘Gifts of Depression’ and though few would willingly undergo such melancholy, he presents a realistic and important point about the wholeness of life. This wholeness includes the ups and the downs and it maintains that all experiences are valid.

The soul presents itself in a variety of colors, including all the shades of gray, blue, and black. To care for the soul, we must observe the full range of all its colorings, and resist the temptation to approve only of white, red, and orange - the brilliant colors”.

People sometimes ask, why do I need a crisis plan now that I am well? I concur, it is harder to conceive the idea of stumble when we are running swiftly toward our goals and dreams. In addition, the thoughts of what may have happened previously can be traumatic to say the least and why again, would we want to revisit such a state – emotionally or otherwise? But this is just as relevant for people with lived experience as others who are yet to share the difficulties of challenged living. Every person needs a crisis plan, a back-up plan, a fall-back, a plan ‘B’, call it what you will. But the idea is not something which will prevent crisis because crisis is never entirely bad. No, the idea is a plan so that should crisis begin, diffusing and managing options are already in place allowing us to stay well and grow through the process.

There are three parts to a good crisis plan. It firstly includes a picture of how life looks when things are well. How things feel and what is happening within and around you. Who is involved and what roles they play. The second part illustrates the appearance and presence of indicators that occur when things are beginning to unravel and become potentially disruptive. For some people this is a lack of grooming or anger, difficulty in concentration or loss of appetite. (Personally, I become heavily withdrawn and sleep a lot – people around me notice). And, as importantly, what strategies can be used to cope. (Again personally, I increase my walking, increase my meditation, talk to at least two people on my list each week and draw and journal as often as I can). The third part is a picture of how things look when the crisis is full blown but most importantly, what supports are already in place. Who will you call, what will you write, where are the numbers, where are the pens? It is important there are an abundance of successful options listed here that you both accept and, will actually use. This is your plan, no-one else’s and it must ‘fit’ you.

Creating a plan is simple enough though never easy. The more time and thought given to your plan, the more accessible, workable and efficient it will be. The very first thing to consider is that while alone-time is necessary, no plan contains only alone-time. All plans include other people and social support in one form or another. As humans, connection is a natural state. While some of us don’t connect with our blood families, it doesn’t mean there is no access to close friends, councillors, teachers, crisis lines, Doctors and other people who are willing to hear our story. Most of these are free. It may go without saying but be sure the people on your plan know they are on your list and what the plan is for. Write or draw your plan to illustrate the three key areas. While I have a particular A4 graphic I use for myself and share with interested others, this is deeply personal and should be something which is appealing to you. Also, it should be fun to do, colourful if that suits, explanatory and easy to reference. The strategies listed should be understandable by you and the people involved. What you need and what you want when you are unwell should be unmistakably clear. It should be conceived with a thought for when it will be used, for example, the listing of numbers and people who will support you should be large enough to ‘see’ when you will have trouble seeing!

People often cringe at the idea of a crisis plan but even after dispersing that resistance there is often another issue which mandates attention. Confining the crisis plan with an old and dusty box in a rarely visited attic, probably does not meet the needs of true accessibility. Having said that, the idea that a crisis plan must be displayed prominently at the home entrance or fridge door, is perhaps, just as invalid. The idea is simple though; KNOW where it is, LOOK at it every two or three months (pending your wellness at any given point), REVIEW it every six months being sure you are still happy with the numbers and people and strategies listed, and USE it when you feel unravel is present or coming.

There’s a confidence that comes in getting on with life and knowing the ‘fall-back’ plan is done. It comes from knowing it is somewhere close, and detailing people and strategies which will allow us to grow from, not collapse under, the weight of an experience we all must endure from time to time.

WELCOME & THANK-YOU

WELCOME & THANK-YOU

It is with respect and passion that I welcome any and all readers to this forum. In addition, I thank Bill for our opportunity to converse over the written word on matters of great importance and depth. It is such an important avenue for expression, this thing we call writing. It allows us to espouse our theories, ask our questions, share our perceived wisdom and grow through the process. It is an opportunity which I for one, am grateful to share with all of you here.

While the context of what happens in this section of the WCMI site can - and no doubt will - change over the course of time, there is a broad plan as to how it might unfold. But what will not change is the basis which underlies the writing. This includes empathy, respect, sisterhood and brotherhood, community, good food (metaphorically speaking!), good company, exercise and creative expression which have been contributing to the healing of people for hundreds of years. And these approaches to life are as valid now as ever before. While I may talk of mental illness or disability and at times, of minority groups, I speak also of the broader and most relevant genre to which we all belong – human beings, 'warts' and all.

As an introduction article I wanted to discuss three things this time round. 1, A welcome and thank you (which I believe has been accomplished in the paragraph above), 2, a brief analysis of what this forum will not be and, 3, some of the more specific directions we will expect to explore in future monthly instalments.

So, with my thank-yous taken care of, what will not happen here? It is important to understand, none of my writing will carry any implication that any of the following statements are supported:

If you are taking medication you should stop immediately

If you have a mental illness it isn't a 'real' illness

If you are struggling to cope it is only because you imagine it to be

If you cannot regain control over your own life you are of weak character

THESE STATEMENTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED.

And again, these are not the direction any article implication will knowingly take. If any person is offended or confused by presented ideas which they feel contradict this mantra or relate to the above statements as possible truths, we should all expect appropriate critique and question. Transparency is an important strength-based principle and it should be expected no less of me than anyone else, including what I say and do.

On the other hand, what will happen here is something quite special, quite simple and yet unusual for a society immersed in a deficit and disease minded focus. We will talk here, via a monthly offering, of what has worked and continues to work for people everywhere, in most places and at most times. Strategies of validation, strengths identification, community, contribution, bilateral exercise, meditation, empowerment, creative expression and co-creation. Through a course of acceptance and action we can begin meaningful steps towards bettering our lives. And by living I do not mean simply existing, I mean living.

So there you have it: a hello and thanks, what we will not be doing, and an idea of what we will be doing. Comments and open discussion are always welcome and I will do my best to reply as necessary every few days. It is my hope that above all else, together, we can provoke ourselves to think through intellectual, relevant and enjoyable discourse.

Recently, while packing up my work and home to move from one state to another, I made the 'rounds' of last goodbyes and thanks. I told one friend that if he visited Melbourne he could look me up and we could get together. I told him I didn't think it was overly arrogant to think we knew something about changing the world and that I would enjoy discussing such thoughts over a beer or two. He grinned and then squeezed my shoulder. “Johnny”, he said, “if two mates are talking with each other about what needs to happen for the world to change, those things and that world … are already changing.”

Til next time, pleasant musings

Johnny
